Peplums, a charming style detail affixed to the waistline, add flair to outfits with their frills and flounces. Whether in trendy prints or solid colors, they effortlessly enhance the mid-section of blouses, jackets, or dresses. Pramita Bose explores their growing appeal in the fashion world.
Gathered in minuscule folds or tiny pleats, a roll of fabric hanging gracefully from a woman’s silhouette exudes a breezy, summery-monsoon feel, becoming a perfect staple for the pleasantly hot season. From bow mania to peplums in the form of ruffles, flares, curls, plumes, furbelows, and more volume at the waist, peplums are spreading a girly, fashionable aura like never before.
Seamlessly attached to the bodice of a top above a skirt or as an adornment below the waist, covering the hips or as a bouncy flounce along the hems of a gown — peplums shine in every sartorial piece. Whether it is stitched onto clothing, used as applique work on a curtain, or as frippery on a tablecloth, peplum-like patches are a tapestry of creative embellishment that artisans and designers have been using for centuries.
Princessy Peplum
Peplums have re-emerged in fashion with frills and trimmings, lending a regal and princess-like feel to the women’s wardrobe.
“It’s amusing to see peplums making a comeback, adding exciting elements through ruffles and ruches around the waist. They offer an hourglass look for curvier women but also carry an aristocratic vibe with their ornate appeal,” says designer Jyoti Das, the founder of the womenswear brand Jyo Das.
Designer Gurrmeen Shrivastav adds, “Peplums render a fun and polished touch to outfits, perfect for casual and formal occasions. They make women feel like queens or demigoddesses.”
Flexible Garnish
Peplums, though often attached to blouses and dresses, can be a stylish addition to many ensembles.
Das elaborates, “Peplums aren’t just for blouses. They can be added to skirts for a layered look, trousers for an X-factor, and even coats as accessories. Such versatile pieces turn ordinary outfits into extraordinary fashion statements.”
Shrivastav agrees, “Peplums can even be added to shorts or trousers, giving pencil skirts a structured, playful look and lending elegance to jumpsuits.”
Everlasting Story
Peplums are timeless, with a historical lineage rooted in ancient Greek clothing and the Victorian era.
“Peplums originated from ancient Greek fashion, evolving from long tunics cinched at the waist. The Victorian era popularized peplums further to enhance hourglass figures. This history makes peplums timeless,” Das explains.
Shrivastav adds, “Greeks draped peplums around the waist, while the Victorians used them on jackets and dresses, a blend of ancient and modern style.”
Indianised Edition
Peplums aren’t just for Western outfits; they can be seamlessly incorporated into Indian wear too.
“Peplums work beautifully with Indian wear. One can add them to sari blouses, lehenga cholis, or even an Anarkali suit for a modern touch. These pieces combine tradition with contemporary trends for an elegant look,” suggests Das.
Shrivastav concurs, “Peplum kurtis with palazzos or skirts create a chic, modern style. Peplums blend effortlessly with traditional Indian outfits.”
One for All
Contrary to popular belief, peplums suit all body types, not just the hourglass figure.
“A peplum can flatter various body types. While it enhances an hourglass figure, it also creates an illusion of a thinner waist. It balances different proportions beautifully,” explains Das.
Shrivastav adds, “Peplums draw attention to the waist, even for pear-shaped figures, and can add curves to straighter body types. Plus-size women can also look fantastic in peplum designs.”
Patterns & Palette
Peplums come in more than just solid colors; they are available in a variety of prints too.
Shrivastav explains, “Floral prints offer a springy, casual look, geometric patterns deliver modernity, and stripes add a classic touch. Peplums in different prints suit different occasions and preferences.”
Fabric Funda
The fabric chosen for a peplum can drastically alter its appearance and feel.
“For a structured look, opt for cotton, brocade, or taffeta. For something flowy and soft, try chiffon, silk, or crepe. The fabric choice influences how the peplum sits and enhances an outfit,” suggests Shrivastav.
Limited Accessories
Minimalism is key when accessorizing with a peplum, as the pleats and folds grab attention.
“Keep accessories simple to balance the look. Opt for classic, understated jewelry like stud earrings or delicate bracelets to complement the outfit,” Shrivastav advises.
Flowery Fervour
Peplums are often associated with spring and summer, thanks to their airy design and floral patterns.
“Peplums are perfect for warmer months due to their light fabrics and flared shape. But they also suit fall and winter when paired with heavier materials and darker tones. It’s all about adapting the style to the season,” Shrivastav explains.
Das adds, “Peplums can be worn year-round by playing with different fabric types and styles.”
Peplumstruck Stars
Many celebrities have embraced the peplum trend with flair.
International stars like Rihanna and Blake Lively showcase peplum styles, while Indian actresses like Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor have effortlessly adopted this fashion trend. Shrivastav remarks, “Celebrities like Zendaya and Emma Watson demonstrate the versatility of peplum outfits, blending them into both casual and glamorous wardrobes.”
Young and Old Alike
Peplums are not just for younger women; they suit all ages.
Shrivastav says, “Peplums aren’t restricted by age. Older women can opt for styles and fabrics that align with their taste, ensuring they look trendy and elegant.”
More Than Fancy
Though peplums are often worn at red-carpet events, they can be styled for everyday wear as well.
Shrivastav suggests, “Peplums can be dressed down with jeans for a casual look or paired with tailored pants for the office. The versatility of peplum outfits allows them to be worn at work, casual outings, and even social gatherings.”
Both Classy & Massy
Peplums often appear high-end, but they aren’t limited to formal occasions.
“While peplums may look elegant and classy, they can also be worn daily with the right styling. A cotton peplum top with jeans is perfect for a casual day out,” says Shrivastav.
The Peplum Appeal
Peplums offer an effortless yet glamorous touch to any wardrobe, making them a must-have in modern fashion. With their ability to suit all body types, styles, and occasions, peplums continue to be an enduring favorite in the ever-evolving world of fashion. Whether styled as a princessy flair or a subtle everyday look, peplums radiate confidence, elegance, and charm.
