At Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, Mumbai, a team of doctors led by Dr. Ashwin Borkar, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Dr. Chandraveer Singh, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist and Head Neck OncoSurgeon, successfully removed a 7cm pituitary gland tumor from the nasal and throat regions of a 63 year old female patient, in what is considered a medical first. This intricate procedure, known as Transnasal Transsphenoidal Surgery, resulted in the complete resolution of the patient’s debilitating symptoms, including nasal obstruction and headaches.
The Patient’s Struggle
Mrs. Saleeba, who lives in Virar, had suffered from chronic nasal congestion and headaches for 1 year and 3 months, which had really taken a toll on her life. Even though she saw numerous doctors, she never got better and she kept getting worse. Desperate for a solution, she turned to Wockhardt Hospitals where she received prompt attention from Dr. Chandraveer Singh and Dr. Ashwin Borkar.
The Diagnosis and Surgical Approach
Dr. Chandraveer Singh explained, “Mrs. Saleeba presented with continuous nasal obstruction, dizziness, loss of appetite, and intermittent headaches, without any significant medical history. They did a scan of her and found a very large tumor in her nasopharynx. Comprehensive diagnostic tests, including nasal endoscopy, CT scans, and Paranasal Sinus computed tomography (PNS), revealed a sizable pituitary tumor extending from the brain to the frontal bone, encroaching on the nasopharynx. This pituitary adenoma, a benign growth, measured 7.3 x 4 x 4.9 cm, a rare occurrence seen in approximately 5 per 100,000 individuals.

Dr. Singh further elaborated on the rarity and complexity of the case, noting the necessity for delicate surgery due to the tumor’s size and its interference with Mrs. Saleeba’s daily activities.
The Intricate Procedure
“We performed an endoscopic tumor excision through the nose, utilizing tiny instruments and an endoscope camera. This method allows for precise and safe tumor removal with a small incision at the back of the nasal cavity, avoiding any scarring on the head. The surgery, which lasted three hours, is effective and minimizes risks such as blood loss and infection, ensuring a quick recovery without harming nasal tissues. Mrs. Saleeba was discharged on the fifth day post-surgery.”

All my symptoms have vanished, and I can now perform my daily activities without trouble.
